Irian Jaya, also know as Papua Barat or West Papua, the western half of the island of New Guinea, is one of the most remote places on earth. A relatively new and underdeveloped dive destination, Irian Jaya combines some of the most colorful land destinations in the world with world-class adventure diving. Operating from Kri Island, Irian Diving is currently the only operator specializing in escorting divers though the Raja Empat Islands area, rich with fish, corals and World War II wrecks. Kri Island is in the middle of the Raja Empat Island group, situated on the tip of the Bird head of New Guinea. The Raja Empat group is very large, and consists of more than 600 islands. The nearest town is Sorong, a distance of 45 miles, the second nearest is Manokwari, a distance of 300 miles. The area is very remote, with no towns or roads. |
