How to get there

We recommend traveling on our contract fares with Singapore Airlines. Singapore departs out of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York for Singapore. From Singapore there are two flights a week in both directions on Silk Air to Ujung Pandang: Monday and Thursday. From Ujung Pandang, there are 3 flights a week in both directions to Sorong: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday.

A U.S. passport is required to enter Indonesia. You must have 6 months of validity remaining on your passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens.

At the moment there are no inoculations necessary for entry into Irian Jaya, but we recommend you see your doctor or call the health department.

Travel tips and information

The hotel we recommend in Ujung Pandang (the name of Ujung Pandang has recently been Changed to Makassar), the Pantai Gapura Makassar, has cottages built over the sea, and is close to the stall restaurants and the famous Buginese wooden schooners.

We work with Cartika Travelindo, a travel agency that can personally transfer you to the airport, handle your ticket reconfirmations and book sightseeing. A highly recommended land exploration would be a 3 day tour of Toraja, one of the most interesting and culturally intact areas in Indonesia.

Recommended extension in Irian Jaya: visiting the Dani people in the Balien Valley. Flights and bookings can be arranged by Great Destinations.
