Layang- Layang is located 165 miles northwest of Kota Kinabalu and is reached by private charter from Kota Kinabalu. The island was once a coral atoll in the South China Sea. Soil was brought in from the mainland and sand pumped out from the sea, and now the island operates as a resort for divers and bird lovers.

Comfortable chalet type accommodations with facilities are available. The remainder of the atoll lies underwater, and the reef drops in walls on all sides in depths of up to 800 feet. The diving season here is from March until September. The island is famous for its abundance of hammerhead sharks, and schools of tuna and barracuda populate the garden walls.
