Over three-quarters of the world's reef fish can be found in the Maldives, and for divers these reefs are world famous. There is the thrill of diving with turtles, moray eels, manta rays, reef sharks and dolphins.
About 3 years ago the Maldives experienced extensive damage to their hard corals when 90-degree currents produced by global warming swept through these islands. None of the fans or fabulous soft corals suffered, and the hard corals are slowly coming back. It appears that the fish are even more abundant now, and this is generally what divers are seeking when they visit the Maldives.
The Republic of Maldives is a small Islamic nation of about 250,000 people with a history, culture, and language all of its own. There are more than 1,200 islands, and most of the islands are uninhabited.
Most of the land destinations were designed as individual resorts, and cater to a European clientele who spend from two weeks to a month at a time. These are numerous in the Maldives, and we can book you on request. However, we recommend live-aboard diving, where one is free to explore the channels and currents for the best diving opportunities in the Maldives. |
