Madang Province

This furtile coastal strip is backed by rugged mountains and is considered the most beautiful town in Papua New Guinea. Offshore are a string of still active volcanic islands. There are World War II wrecks to dive here, large protected lagoons, and the outer barrier reef is dotted with islands.

How to get there

From Port Moresby there are several daily flights from Port Moresby to Madang.

We recommend Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines for divers who are coming through Australia and Singapore Airlines for passengers traveling via Asia. Air Niugini, the national carrier, gives divers and extra allowance and discounted fares within the country. The baggage allowance is 16 kilos and one carry on. Overweight baggage on Air Niugini is quite inexpensive.

Travel tips and information

The town of Madang is small and well worth visiting. There is a monument to "The Coast Watchers" who were the people of New Guinea who helped the allies during World War II. The village dancers from this coastal area do a terrific dancing performance for the visitors.
